Port St. Lucie voters have elected a longtime councilmember to be their new mayor.

Shannon Martin defeated St. Lucie County firefighter and U.S. veteran EJ Bernier.

The election was set after the resignation of Mayor Greg Oravec in June.

Martin will serve in the mayoral seat until November of next year, when she'll have to run for re-election if she wants to keep it.

Nobody received over 50 percent of the votes in the race for the City Council, District 3 seat being vacated by Martin. The top two vote-getters, Anthony Bonna and Travis Walker will have a run-off on December 7th.
