(Undated) -- Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac is dead at the age of 79.

In a statement, her family said she passed away peacefully this morning after a short illness. She was a key contributor to the group's multi-platinum success during the late 70s.

McVie's family said she was in the company of loved ones and they were so lucky to have her in their lives. She joined Fleetwood Mac as a permanent member in 1971 and served as a main songwriter and lead vocalist.
