Citrus County, FL - Authorities in Citrus County say an animal welfare investigation led to the removal of dozens of cats from a residence and the arrest of a woman connected to the property.
According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to concerns about possible animal neglect at a home in Floral City.
During the investigation, officials discovered a large number of animals living inside the residence and around the property.
Investigators reported that 52 live cats were removed from the home along with one deceased cat.
Deputies said the resident, identified in the arrest report as a 24-year-old woman, allegedly operated an animal rescue organization from the property.
Authorities said the investigation began after complaints were received regarding the condition of animals being kept at the home.
When deputies arrived at the residence, investigators reported detecting strong odors and observing large amounts of animal waste throughout the home.
According to the arrest report, several cats were allegedly living in overcrowded areas and did not appear to have adequate access to food, water or appropriate care.
During the investigation, officials also reported locating additional deceased animals on the property.
According to the sheriff’s office, some animals were found inside containers and trash bags while others were discovered in outdoor areas surrounding the residence.
The 24 year old woman was taken into custody and faces charges related to animal cruelty and animal neglect.
Investigators said the allegations remain under investigation as authorities continue reviewing evidence and documenting the conditions where the animals were kept.
The cats removed from the property were transported to Citrus County Animal Services for medical evaluation and treatment.
