PLANT CITY -- They drop the ball in Times Square, a peach in Atlanta, and a chile pepper in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Now Plant City wants to get in on welcoming the New Year... by dropping a six-foot-high strawberry 80 feet from a crane at midnight.
Dawn Hyatt, executive director of Plant City Main Street, says she got the berry rolling after discovering the winter strawberry capital had nothing going on after Christmas. Strawberry growers were quick to join the cause. Hyatt rallied local businesses and to create the berry and furnish the crane to hoist it into the air.
The free family friendly event includes a kids' zone and food trucks. It runs from 7 pm to just after midnight.
